Intermediate 3 – Weeks 5 & 6

I missed this weeks class as I was away on holiday. The focus was on using dry brush and the end exercise was to paint a woodland scene of silver birch tress. The instructor kindly sent me the files from class – so I had a go at home.

Dry Brush Practice

I read the course work and then had a practice at dry brush technique using a range of brushes and different strokes.ode to the colours used is

Below is the source photograph of the silver birch trees in a woodland setting.

Attempt One

This is my first attempt. I was not very happy with the results.

Attempt Two

I decided to have another go. I started to test some mixes of different colours that I was going to need.

I then painted the scene a second time.

The dry brush was used to give texture to the silver birch bark.

I think my second attempt is a great improvement. I did not like it when I had finished it. But it has grown on me. Below you can compare my final image with the source image.

Week 6

This week we selected a picture to try and paint. I chose a snowy landscape showing a farm and some ploughed fields.

This is the image that I decided to paint.

I started by mixing the colours I was going to use and test the dry brush technique. Below is my practice sheet.

I then attempted to paint the scene.
