Turner (No. 1)

My wife bought me a book of Turners paintings – J.M.W Turner Watercolours by David Blayney Brown. The book contains some great paintings by Turner. So I had a go at painting one – Loch Long, Morning.

Loch Long, Morning by J.M.W. Turner

Above is the painting that I attempted to recreate / copy. Much harder than it looks…

Version One

This is version one. I like the shadows, but the colours of the mountains in the background are wrong. Something seems to happen between me mixing a colour, testing it and the adding it to the paper.

  • Paper Used: Ken Bromley Practice Paper 25% Cotton
  • Paints: Winsor and Newton artist grade tubes

Version Two

I think that I improved with version two. The colours are more muted.

  • Paper Used: Canson Moulin Du Roy 300gsm 100% Cotton
  • Paints: Winsor and Newton artist grade tubes
