Lake District

Intermediate 2 – Weeks 9 & 10

End of Term Project

The last two lessons of term were for us to attempt our own much larger project. I decided to paint from a photograph of Buttermere in the Lake District (a photo I took while hiking around the lake).

Planning and Testing

I started by planning out how I was going to paint the picture. A quick sketch and then making notes to help me understand the order of painting and some of the techniques I needed to try

I thought that the dry stone wall was a major element of the painting. So I tried various ways to paint it. Theses included:

  • Drawing in the wall with an ink pen and then painting in the colours
  • Trying different brushes to create the brick shapes
  • Testing different colours

I also tested dry-brush for the surface of the lakes and flat brush for some of the grasses.

Final Image

Quite happy with the final painting. There are bits I like and bits that could be improved.
