Intermediate 3 – Week 3 & 4

This week we asked to bring in brown things to paint as part of a still life painting.

We were tasked to mix a range of brown colours without using brown or earth coloured pigments.

Mixing the Colour Brown

The image above shows the browns that I mixed. Most of mine were mixed by mixing complementary colours (i.e.Green + Red, Blue + Orange, Yellow + Purple).

The code to the colours used is:

  • PSG = Permanent Sap Green
  • PR = Permanent Rose
  • SL = Scarlet Lake
  • WG = Winsor Green (Blue Shade)
  • FU = French Ultramarine
  • WB = Winsor Blue (Green Shade)
  • WO = Winsor Orange
  • WL = Winsor Lemon
  • WV = Winsor Violet
  • WYD = Winsor Yellow Deep

Still Life

We arrange the items people had brought in. Our group had a log, fir cones, conkers, acorns and a sprig of fir tree.

I did a quick sketch and then added a wash. My plan was to redraw (from the photograph) at home and paint this.

I was quite happy with the quick sketch and wash.

Homework

The first stage was to do another sketch. This time on A3 paper.

Below is my first attempt. I used a light box to trace the sketch onto watercolour paper. I was not really happy with the results.

I decided to change the composition. I cropped the photograph and did another sketch

Cropped Photograph

This sketch was A4 size and I traced it, using a light box, on to watercolour paper. The final painting was done in class. I used clingfilm to try and get some texture to the log.

I was not really happy with either painting (then I tink that I am never happy with anything that I paint). There are bits I like in each painting and things that I think could have been improved.
