Intermediate 3 – Week 2

Using Stencils to create Repeatable Shapes

This week we were using stencils to create shapes and patterns.

We were using paper doilies, leaves and plastic onion nets. I decided to try a few different techniques using different stencils.

Doilies

This sheet show the results of painting through a paper doily.

– Playing with a Doily –
A) Drawing through a doily with a watercolour pencil and then paining in the shapes created
B) Using a sponge to apply paint through a doily
C) Using a stipple brush to apply paint through a doily
D) Using a toothbrush to spray paint through a doily
E) Using a brush (no. 6 round) to paint over a doily
F) Using a brush (no. 0 round) to paint through the holes in the doily
G) Using a brush (½” flat) to paint over a doily
– Playing with Nets –
H) Painting over a plastic net
I) Sponging over a plastic net

Leaves

This sheet show the results of using various leaves to act as a mask.

A) Painted a green wash. Used the leaf as a mask and then sponging paint over the top
(note: i wet the leaf to keep it in place, but his resulted in the green wash to bleed – but I liked the result)
B) Using a sponge to paint over the leaf
C) Using a toothbrush to spray paint over the leaf
D) Painted a green wash. Using a tooth brush to spray colours over the leaf
E) Using a sponge to apply paint over a different leaf

Nets and a Pear

This image show the results of playing with a plastic net. Then painting a pear.

A) Using a sponge to apply paint through a plastic net
B) Applying paint with a stipple brush through a plastic net
C & D) Painting through the net with a small brush (no. 0 round)
E) Painting a pear. Put down a green wash then using a mask (mad from tracing paper) to apply the brown speckles with a toothbrush I also glazed the thop half of the top row, adding another wash to make it darker.
